Entomologist Lori Lach, from James Cook University (Australia), explains that whether or not you shake a jar containing two species of ants, they will likely be aggressive toward each other. According to this “inspirational” story, colour seems crucial for ants to tell friends from enemies. That is not the case: they mainly use tactile (touch) and olfactory (smell) cues to recognise each other. Entomologist Philip S.
