If farmed salmon were left alone, their flesh would be grey. Wild salmon turn pink from the krill and shrimp they eat, but fish in a sea cage never get that diet, so the industry adds a synthetic pigment to their feed and picks the shade it wants from a colour chart. Then it tells us its salmon has a 'wonderful colour'. That's one of the ads you'll start seeing on the Underground this week. More than 5,000 of them are going up across London over the next two months as we launch Project Slingshot's campaign against salmon farming. When we started Slingshot, our bet was that factory farming survives because people have never been shown it, not because they support it, and the industry works very hard to keep it that way. We've already done the gas chambers used on pigs and the chickens bred to grow so fast their legs give way. Salmon felt like the obvious next one, because few foods have been sold to us so successfully as clean, natural and healthy. The colour is only the start. Every Scottish salmon in a UK supermarket comes from a factory farm, and almost all of it is produced by four companies, none of them British. On some farms almost 40% of the fish died in the cages, which is the worst figure since 1989, and last year the farms discharged more than 48,000kg of formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, straight into Scottish lochs. Some of the worst cruelty investigators have filmed was on RSPCA Assured farms, and in at least one case the farm was organic too. Meanwhile these companies have taken millions in public grants, and over a period when more than 35 million salmon died unexpectedly, the regulator carried out just two unannounced inspections.
