❌ False! This is not a tax but a deposit. https://tinyurl.com/3pj2jw3d The Mail & Guardian is not known for their factual reporting. https://tinyurl.com/2u29946t The original source comes from a 2014 article by the German site Silicon Africa which equated a monetary rule with an alleged "colonial tax”. https://tinyurl.com/5b7caw5k This misleading info has been circulating in different media ever since for political reasons. There are 4 rules to the CFA treaties signed by 14 African countries and France. Note that those countries are free to leave at will: ▶ France guarantees convertibility of the CFA into any foreign currency, ▶The parity rate is fixed with the Euro, ▶Capital transfers within the monetary zone are free and unrestricted, ▶In return, 50% of the reserves of the countries in the CFA zone are deposited in an account at the Banque de France (which earns interests). https://tinyurl.com/3hsxp6fr France does not use the funds. This system provides a high level of confidence in the stability of the African currency. https://tinyurl.com/2cte9dz6 Misinformation in Africa is rife, this is used to manipulate opinion e.g. Africa Report in 2019 : https://tinyurl.com/5cujsamx
