Using donut charts to show trends is misleaing as they reflect a share (%), while the total number of deaths is not constant https://bit.ly/4gsL5cl. Using the same source, our graphs allow for the analysis of trending data from 1980 onwards https://bit.ly/4fsX9tn. Deaths among US soldiers are generally downward-sloping, except during the Iraq war. The crude death rate decreased from 0.12% to 0.06% over 1980-2023. Accidents are the main driver of the decrease, partially compensated by self-inflicted deaths. Suicide among US soldiers has generated interest from the Military and academics (https://bit.ly/3VASNZN, https://bit.ly/3BptmDS). According to James Whitworth, the keys to reduce soldiers’ suicide are, among others: enhanced mental health support, reducing stigma, monitoring and follow-up https://bit.ly/4iwHQ5C. Comparing with the general population of the same age (17-62 yo, CDC WONDER) https://bit.ly/3DaJUjl, the causes of death are wildly different: the general population mostly dies of illness rather than suicide, also on the rise. Accidents trend upward, highlighting the difference in composition among the two groups.
