Some students are desperate to get a PhD position. Some say they’ve spent years applying and trying. As if it's a golden ticket to a better future. I understand them - I was there too. One thing I’ve learned over the years is: Your true passion may be misaligned with PhD. Your inner fire may still be waiting to be released. PhD may not help you discover your true purpose. Rowan Atkinson got BSc in electrical engineering at Newcastle University. Then, he started his PhD at Oxford. Then he got involved in student theatre and sketch comedy. Then he met writer Richard Curtis (who co-write Mr. Bean) and composer Howard Goodall (who made music for it). Then he DROPPED out of his PhD program, got his MSc degree and started his big and successful career. 📍 My point? Don’t get too obsessed with a PhD. Many students get disappointed by it. Yes - DO see it as a possible way forward. But also look for your inner fire. An MSc degree may be more than enough to change the world.
