Happy New Year 2024! Thrilled to start this new year by sharing our latest #ANDistheFuture podcast episode on chemistry, science AND music with Nuno Maulide. Nuno is what we would call a Renaissance man: he is a professor and head of the Institute for Organic Chemistry at the Universität Wien AND he is an award winning pianist. In the podcast we have a fabulous discussion about the musical talent of brilliant scientists such as Albert Einstein and Max Planck and what scientists and business leaders can learn from music. But the highlight, of course, is hearing him play pieces by Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Debussy so beautifully. The rest of the podcast is just as amazing. ✔ It is true that Albert Einstein was a pianist, with the violin being his initial instrument (source: http://www.gci.org.uk/Documents/einstein&music.pdf). 🎻 Max Planck was also a pianist (https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/physics/1918/planck/facts/). 🎹 The podcast is particularly interesting, sharing notable musical facts that generally hold true. 🎵 Additionally, it features delightful performances by Nuno Maulide (although confirmation is hindered by the podcast format with no images). But as far as we can tell, it is him playing. Nevertheless, he is indeed a musician (https://observador.pt/programas/em-40-minutos/no-laboratorio-socializa-se-mais-que-na-musica/) 🎶 Debates arise on statements like "Bach was a scientist because his music is structured." The question of what defines science and whether music fits that criterion is a philosophical one. However, Jesu bleibet meine Freude, BWV 147, is indeed a piece by Bach. While we refrain from passing judgment on music, it's undeniable that this piece is both an extraordinary composition and contains elements of mathematics, characteristic of many of Bach's baroque works. 🎼
