We waste 1 billion meals every single day. So, France made headlines by banning food waste completely. It became the first country to make it illegal for supermarkets to throw away edible food. Instead? 📦 They must donate it to charities. The result? 🍽️ 10 million meals donated ♻️ 41% drop in food waste 🌍 Fewer emissions, less landfill, more people fed Food waste isn’t just about trash... It’s about climate, equity, and responsibility. Because when food goes to waste: → The water, land, and energy used to grow it are wasted too → It rots in landfills, releasing methane (80x more powerful than CO₂) → 783 million people sleep hungry every day If everyone in the US saved just 1 meal from going to waste, it would be like taking 212,000 cars off the road for a year. That’s the scale of what’s possible when policy meets individual action. We need laws that hold corporations accountable. But we also need to come together to shift the culture around waste. 🍎 Plan your meals 🥕 Use leftovers 🥫 Donate your extra food 📅 Learn the difference between “best by,” “sell by,” and “use by” dates The truth is: we don’t have a food shortage problem. We have a distribution crisis driven by neglect, profit, and habit. No one should be hungry in a world that wastes this much.

✅It is true that France was the first country to ban food waste from supermarkets of more than 400m² (https://cvc.li/rbTdv; https://cvc.li/jrTWq). While it has not been demonstrated that production or supply decreased, food donations did increase (https://cvc.li/zxTii), Therefore, this measure appears to address equity more than emissions reduction. ❌More than 10 million ton of food waste were produced in 2015 in France (https://cvc.li/HHPWn), and 8.8 million were produced in 2021 (https://cvc.li/pNIpn) : the reduction is significant, but it cannot be confirmed that it is related to this law. Moreover, since no data is available for pre-2015 values, a 41% decrease cannot be confirmed. Still, food waste remains high, at around 125 kg per person per year in France! ✅Methane is more potent than CO2 in terms of its greenhouse effect: In traps heat nearly 30 times as much as CO2 (https://cvc.li/NrshM). As its concentration has more than doubled in the last centuries (contrary to CO2), it does correspond to a ratio of 80 over CO2 on a 20 year-period (https://cvc.li/NOnUP) regarding its warming power. ✅It is true that approximately 700 million people sleep hungry every day (https://cvc.li/hiNLg). We won’t be as specific as “783” million, but the range of magnitude is accurate.
