✅It is true that France was the first country to ban food waste from supermarkets of more than 400m² (https://cvc.li/rbTdv; https://cvc.li/jrTWq). While it has not been demonstrated that production or supply decreased, food donations did increase (https://cvc.li/zxTii), Therefore, this measure appears to address equity more than emissions reduction. ❌More than 10 million ton of food waste were produced in 2015 in France (https://cvc.li/HHPWn), and 8.8 million were produced in 2021 (https://cvc.li/pNIpn) : the reduction is significant, but it cannot be confirmed that it is related to this law. Moreover, since no data is available for pre-2015 values, a 41% decrease cannot be confirmed. Still, food waste remains high, at around 125 kg per person per year in France! ✅Methane is more potent than CO2 in terms of its greenhouse effect: In traps heat nearly 30 times as much as CO2 (https://cvc.li/NrshM). As its concentration has more than doubled in the last centuries (contrary to CO2), it does correspond to a ratio of 80 over CO2 on a 20 year-period (https://cvc.li/NOnUP) regarding its warming power. ✅It is true that approximately 700 million people sleep hungry every day (https://cvc.li/hiNLg). We won’t be as specific as “783” million, but the range of magnitude is accurate.
