The story is almost true and has been thoroughly researched.
Coca-Cola was indeed invented by Dr. Pemberton, an Atlanta pharmacist, shortly after the introduction of the prohibition in 1886. Originally, his formula combined coca leaf extract and kola nut (cola for caffeine) with wine, inspired by Vin Mariani—a popular French tonic that mixed cocaine with wine.
However, due to the new prohibition law, Pemberton replaced the wine with sugar syrup. He carried a jug to Jacobs' Pharmacy, where it was sold at a soda fountain for 5 cts per glass.
Uncovered records reveal that the original syrup contained 3 drams of fluid extract of coca (about 1.11 mL), though they do not specify how much syrup was diluted with carbonated water.
After Pemberton's death, the Coca-Cola Company bottled it in 1888, and by 1904, they had modified the formula to "spent" coca leaves. In 1929, the company shifted to a cocaine-free coca leaf extract.
Remarkably, as of 1988, it was documented that Coca-Cola still sources it from the only U.S. entity legally permitted to import coca leaves from South America.
