🛑 Is This the End of Diesel in Paris?
Paris has just taken a bold step that could change the future of urban transportation.
The city has banned the sale of diesel at four major gas stations around the busy Périphérique ring road.
These stations accounted for nearly 50% of all diesel sales in the city.
The move, led by Mayor Anne Hidalgo, aims to phase out diesel cars and improve air quality.
However, the decision has sparked intense debate, particularly among commuters who depend on diesel vehicles.
Critics argue that the new measures, including the 50 km/h speed limit, are harmful.
They claim it disproportionately impacts lower-income residents and businesses reliant on diesel fleets.
Will this be a turning point for sustainable urban transport, or will it deepen existing inequalities?
Paris is grappling with the challenge of balancing environmental goals with economic realities.

✅ True!
It’s all part of Anne Hidalgo’s 2014 campaign, so there’s no surprise here.

From 01/01/2025, diesel cars registered between 2006 and 2010 will no longer be allowed access to the Greater Paris area within the A86 motorway. By 2030, no diesel cars will be permitted in Paris at all.

The ban on diesel selling touches 4 TotalEnergies stations. This was part of concession contracts signed from 2018 to 2020, which included a clause about the future ban on diesel sales. TotalEnergies was well aware of this decision when it signed the contracts.

This decision affects mainly coaches, tradespeople like plumbers and delivery drivers, as well as emergency services such as the police and fire brigade and those stations represented 50% of diesel distribution in Paris.

In parallel, there’s a huge investment in public transport. By the end of the 2020s, the public transport network in the Ile-de-France region will double, with 139 new stations and an additional 359 km of metro, tram, train, and bus lines being introduced.
