The Price of Misplaced Priorities: War, Processed Food, and the Elusive Quest for Peace
In a world where the United Nations' annual budget for peace is a mere $3 billion while the United States allocates a staggering $1 trillion for war, we must ask ourselves: How can we truly achieve peace with such a stark disparity in resources?
The Military-Industrial Complex and Processed Food Industry: A Deadly Alliance
This imbalance is not just a matter of national budgets. It reflects a deeper, more insidious problem: the alliance between the arms industry and large food corporations. Both profit from human suffering, albeit in different ways.
1. The Arms Industry:
- Global arms sales topped $592 billion in 2022
- Five largest arms companies are all based in the United States
- These companies heavily lobby governments for increased military spending
2. The Processed Food Industry:
- Global market value estimated at $2.7 trillion in 2022
- Linked to rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease
- Uses addictive ingredients and deceptive marketing practices
Both industries prioritize profit over human wellbeing, creating a cycle of physical and geopolitical ill-health.
The American Paradox: Prosperity for Some, Struggle for Many
While the U.S. projects an image of global power, the reality for many Americans is far from prosperous:
- 37.9 million Americans lived in poverty in 2021 (11.6% of the population)
- Over 500,000 people experience homelessness on any given night
- Total U.S. household debt reached $17.06 trillion in Q1 2023
- 40% of Americans would struggle to cover a $400 emergency expense
Despite these domestic challenges, the U.S. continues to prioritize military spending over social programs and peace initiatives.
The Path to Peace: Redefining Priorities
To achieve lasting peace and improve quality of life, we need a radical shift in priorities:
1. Reallocate Resources: Even a fraction of the U.S. military budget could significantly boost UN peacekeeping efforts and global development programs.
2. Regulate Industries: Stricter regulations on both arms manufacturers and food corporations could reduce their harmful impacts.
3. Invest in Education and Healthcare: Addressing domestic issues like poverty, education, and healthcare could create a more stable society less prone to conflict.
4. Promote Diplomacy: Increased funding for diplomatic efforts and conflict resolution could prevent wars before they start.
5. Support Sustainable Agriculture: Investing in local, sustainable food systems could reduce reliance on processed foods and improve public health.
Conclusion: A Call for Change
The current system, which prioritizes war over peace and corporate profits over human wellbeing, is unsustainable. It's time for citizens to demand change from their governments and corporations.

The video on the left was filmed on Yaroslaviv Val Street in Kiev. While it’s hard to pinpoint the exact date, the Aroma Kava storefront has been there since 2016.
The video on the right is at least from 2020, taken from the YouTube channel ‘MORALS OVER MONEY’, which focuses on helping fentanyl victims in Philadelphia:

This issue remains relevant but does not represent the US overall.
Regarding life in Kiev, it's important to maintain perspective. In the summer of 2023, young people were interviewed about their nights out.
For many, continuing with life as usual is a form of defiance against Russia.
The owner of the Hemingway Bar, whose first establishment was destroyed by a bomb, put it this way: "The sun always rise!"

However, many also speak of air raid alerts, bomb shelters, and curfews. There are barricaded houses and ruined buildings.
As of May 2023, 78% of Ukrainians reported that family members or close friends had been injured or killed since 2022.

No one forgets the war, and everyone lives with constant apprehension.
